The sun is setting in the West, as the fledling is no longer afraid of the scarecrow. The leveret colludes with the snare in the dead of night. Before the dawn, the revenant sets out to kill the immortal.
RENEGADE is a novella set in the post-apocalyptic Earth of the Hummelverse that follows the protagonist, an ancient main battle tank known as the "Scarecrow" in a first person perspective. They first appeared in a short story that establishes their old age, memory issues, and mostly passive role as a loner that wanders the lands without trying to interfere too much with the lives of the other, less advanced—and most importantly, much more mortal—machines around them. This changes when a stranger approaches them and claims to act on behalf of someone the Scarecrow allegedly wronged—an incident that they have no recollection of. But this someone won't rest until the events of the past are amended, by nothing less than the offender's death.
In tank society, there are very few problems that cannot be solved with enough firepower. This time the solution to the conflict isn't as simple as finding and killing the enemy, however—the vengeful stranger eludes the Scarecrow's detection seemingly effortlessly. Just like the memories and understanding of their supposed wrongdoing continue to elude them as well; although, it’s not like diplomacy was an option to begin with. An exhausting game of cat and mouse ensues that they have no choice but to participate in as they run from an invisible, yet seemingly omnipresent threat.
