Story 3: Goldfish

[A drawing made at the time of writing]

Sky let out a scream as the roller coaster car plummets towards the ground. They don’t know why they even thought that saying yes to the amusement park invitation was a good idea. Nonetheless Sky was convinced, whether willingly or not, to join their co-workers on a weekend trip to Insert, the Awesome Amusement Park. But they ultimately decide that maybe this whole Team Building thing their boss wanted to do is not such a bad thing after all. After almost hurling their lunch on hundreds of unsuspecting park goers, Sky and their coworkers continue exploring the rest of the park.

Amusement parks are not all that bad, Sky is quite neutral towards it. It’s amusing how jumpy people get in the Haunted House, though; Sky has to fake their own reactions. Especially when the staff overthink all the timings, it is almost impossible even for a novice mind reader not to foresee the next ‘jump scare’. On the other hand, though, Sky is not very fond of heights –– flying lessons back in The Academia were the worst. So it isn’t very hard to ‘fake’ those reactions.

Sky has been doing a good job controlling their blocking to other people’s thoughts today –– it is, after all, a “day off”. They practice socialising without the use of mind reading, should that unspoken day ever come. Sky is not very good with Normies as well, which is where this kind of outing comes handy.

They all moved on from the haunted house to buy some snacks before entering… the Not Dry Lands!

“Sky!” Washi, one of the paralegals, gestures at an attraction excitedly. The sign reads ‘IS THIS FRUIT LEGAL?’ and seems to be some kind of eating competition. Sky, who has been used to the Specials diet since they were in school, shakes their head slightly.

“Washi” Sky whines, “You know I have a strict diet.”

“Ah, right,” Washi grins, “Well, I’ll be going first then.”

Sky watches as Washi and two other paralegals go up onto the stage and are presented with an assortment of dishes to attempt eating. The others have gone ahead and went on the Lazy Rivers, and Sky is just watching some of their belongings. The first dish to be presented is called Bazooka Belly, a pink looking jelly that is described as ‘exploding with flavours as it enters your mouth’.

Being on the first stage, the jelly is relatively easy to finish in a short amount of time, only eliminating two contestants out of ten. Both of them begin shaking and are promptly taken to the infirmary. Sky watches with cautious eyes as they bring out the second dish, the Shedding Shrimp, a plate full of unpeeled shrimp contestants will have to peel themselves. However, Sky watched with horror as 4 of the contestants began to swallow them whole.

Sky feels like they’re starting to understand the game’s name. With those four less than average intelligence contestants gone, only 4 remain and the final dish is called… Gandl-af’s Goldfish.

The goldfish is covered by some grey powder seasoning that doesn’t look appealing at all to Sky, with some awful-looking grey plant scattered on top of the fries that looked like it was fried for way too long than it should. Thankfully Washi and the other paralegals forfeit and the last remaining contestant won by default, evidently all were relieved.

Meowmeow would refuse to talk to me ever again if I ever served her that, Sky thinks. And as Washi and the others step down from the stage, the others come back from the Lazy River and together begin to walk back towards the entrance.

After dishes that are way scarier than the Haunted House jumpscares, Sky thinks they’ve had enough of Insert today.
