(Mica) Magika (1/3)

All that was left was to sign the thirty-page instruction manual and she would be eligible to take part in the newest experiment of Noctec. Mica was already following the advances of the company to create artificial magic for a long time. And after gods knows how many centuries will finally all the worries of Purists like her dissipate altogether. A way to fool the Veil to simulate being a magician without actually being one. To prevent the arcane animals from trying to forcefully turn one into a dreaded Taken, a corrupted magician. But the kobold was not interested in simply receiving a cure against the Purist's inability to travel past the secure borders of the country, no. Mica was interested in the further research helmed by none other than one of the four eternal gods, the goddess of science Notitia. Magika!

With the robotic entity being the owner of Noctec Mica had already the honour of talking to her multiple times, as the ex-con had devoted her young body to serving science repenting for her sins and helping with turning a new leaf. Her eyes let out a silent sirring noise as she narrowed her freshly operated artificial pupils, switching through multiple embedded modes and scanning the document for any hidden text or barely readable fine print. Not being able to find any small hint that may raise the risk level of this particular prototype she wrote down her name in crude letters. Mica. Date and location: 03.07.4996, Scamall, Mistbelt. Looking at the document she stood up from the table in the waiting area of Noctec's biomechanical facility. Walking over to the receptionist her tail began to wag in anticipation, excited that she managed after all to get one of the elusive spots in being a second-generation Magika user. With the product still being in the test phase only kobold 'lab-bolds' had access to the possibility of becoming mages via these new and alternative means, receiving the virtual-Veil flu shot prematurely was only a mere bonbon at that stage. She will get access to the newest generation of cybernetic enhancements and that free of charge! She even will get paid for it to endure one such 'medium-risk' procedure.

Mica smiled to herself happily. Her new family will be overjoyed by this serious change to her persona. A change for the better! She didn't tell them her plan, wanting this to be a surprise, Micor and Pencari would love the new her. She will finally be similarly juiced up as the father of these two, Bors, being able to compare her visible cybernetics with his giant arms. And Vulpes will be pleased that the ex-criminal, whom she helped to get past her past with the Familia, will be a pioneer of this new technology helping out the country she loved so much. Being so dead sure that her choice will get picked up positively by her replacement family, her inhibitions were noticeably lower today. This would be the first medium-risk experiment she will ever volunteer for. And also the last, not wanting to push her luck too far, A choice, not without risk, but one her mind was more than content with to follow. Good things occurred to her lately, and Mica felt oddly untouchable. A wave of highly positive events happening she was eager to ride for a bit longer. She will survive the procedure with flying colours and return to her new family by the following evening with a newly amped-up body and fresh abilities.

Mica looked down once more at the document in her small purple paws as she walked the long way to the reception. Cheekily peeking at the ability she chose for herself as if she never even heard of it before. Magika: Control. Based on the description, it is an ability akin to telekinesis.

The ability to control free-floating objects as if they would be one's limbs, but without the limits of any arm limiting the range.

The kobold was imagining this power to be quite useful for everyday life purposes, but not only for these, She could give her dancing attempts some extra spice with floating props. Or ... bypass security measurements getting access to prior inaccessible goodies to steal ... no, bad Mica! She sighed and stopped, shaking off her intrusive thoughts of reverting back to a life of crime. She was here to mark the final step to strip off the past and embrace the future. Mica pouted and looked up to the reception, having finally arrived. She cleared her throat and gave her squeaky voice a bit of depth to imbue it with authority.

"I have finished filling out the formulas, Mrs Erigi Here are they! I am ready to once again assist Lady Notitia in her research."

"Back so soon, Mica?" Mrs Erigi leant forth and observed the pink kobold through cybernetically enhanced sky-blue eyes, her salamander tongue coming forth, attempting to moisturize her eyes, but halting when she remembered why she got these implants. "You were at the optic research plant only last week. Your eyes barely have healed out. Are you sure you want to go back under the scalpel that soon?"

"Of course, Mrs Erigi!" Mica hopped up and grabbed the counter that was just within her reach and pulled herself up to look at the kind receptionist. "After all is today the last day I could volunteer for the Magika program. I missed the first wave sadly as you know quite well."

"Yeah, ... I am aware of that. You were after all quite audible after having realized that the spots were all booked out. But Mica?" The salamander reached forth and gently patted her head with her oily hand. "You are sure you want to do this? This is way more than what you did before, fairly risky even. This is not akin to what else you have in your body. The risk for the omni-retina, the adaptive hearing, your nanobot blood or even the 'kobold-leveller' were all non-existent, barely a threat. I ... am not supposed to tell you that, Mica, but have you informed those close to you about this surgery? ... Not all of the first batch had survived the procedure. Lady Notitia may have improved the process based on the data gathered, but she only lowered the risk from high to medium. You might not leave the laboratory this time."

Mica stopped purring and looked down, sliding down on the floor, her dark grey foot claws tinking against the perfectly white floor. She thought for a moment and then nodded, slowly.

"I want it to be a surprise, which means I didn't tell them anything about today's plan. But my faith in Notitia is unbroken. I am perfectly safe in her gigantic metal arms, all four of them. Do not worry about me, Mrs Erigi. I am like the pest, I will return.~"

It was apparent to Mica that the receptionist felt uncomfortable about handling her documents, but eventually, she sighed and scanned them in, sending the binding contract to the office of the head of Noctec, Notitia herself.

"I am obliged to tell you the following, Mica. In the case of your unfortunate demise will the full sum stated on the contract be sent to the person you trust the most, which would be Field Commander Aurelia Vulpes. Furthermore, will she receive access to your body for a proper burial as well as financial and sentimental support to deal with the consequences of the risk you have agreed to undergo. The contract is binding, this was your last chance to back out of it, a chance which has now passed. Please follow the green arrows, the team will intercept you and guide you to the designated cybernetic bay. Oh, and Mica?"

The red salamander broke her professionalism once again, cracking a weak smile. She really cared about the quirky kobold it seemed.

"The following is binding as well. I will invite you to a coffee and cake once you return. I won't tolerate you being unable to attend. Good luck, Mica."
