Character Slots

Every player begins with one (1) Active character slot.

Gaining Additional Slots

There are two ways to gain an additional character on the server:

  • Level Up: Upon reaching Level 10 with your first character, you unlock a second Active character slot, allowing you to create and play a new character. Two Active characters is the maximum number of characters for Players.
  • Join the Team: Players who serve as GMs, Organizers, or Helpers are granted one additional character slot as a token of appreciation for their contribution to the server.

Character Bench

If you want to try out a different character but don’t want to retire or end the story of your current character, you can place them on the Bench. This is the equivalent of the character taking a vacation or a sabbatical.

To do this, simply ping a Helper in your Character Log that you would like to Bench the character. The Helper will apply the “Bench” tag to your post, and then your Active slot is freed up.

Reactivating a Benched Character

Each player is allowed ONE (1) free reactivation per month, meaning you can swap a single benched character back into your active roster one time per month. This helps keep things fresh while maintaining a sense of commitment to your characters.

To reactivate a benched character, you must ping an Organizer in the character’s Character Log post and ask for their status to be changed.

Yeah Recruit tier (levels 3 and 4) you can bounce around stuff basically at-will (only a time requirement of you gotta keep it for a week or play at least one quest with it before a new change and also if you change you lose banked tokens)

Bench Limits

You can only have ONE (1) benched character per Active character slot. This means if you have two Active character slots, you can have up to two benched characters, one for each slot. If you want to bench another character, you’ll need to either reactivate or retire one of your existing benched characters.

Legacy Characters

In Xohana, we honor the journeys our characters have taken, whether they began here or in another universe. If you have a character from a previous server or campaign that existed in the Xohanaverse or interacted with its denizens prior to 7/31/2025, you have three paths to choose from for their future in Xohana:

  1. Blaze of Glory:
Allow your character to conclude their story in a memorable and meaningful way. This could be a grand retirement quest or a final, heroic deed. As a token of this legacy, you may receive special lore rewards, such as higher security clearance or exclusive knowledge about the universe.
  2. Become an NPC:
Donate your character to the world of Xohana by transforming them into a non-player character. A designated GM will take on the role of guiding this character’s journey, allowing them to appear in adventures and contribute to the world’s evolving story. While you’ll provide the initial background and personality, the GM will ultimately shape their future adventures.
  3. Continue the Adventure:
If you wish to continue playing your Legacy Character, you can recreate them under the current Character Creation rules, starting at level three. They’ll keep all their memories, personality, and lore, but they’ll begin anew in terms of abilities and power. Lorewise, an in-game event occurs that will revert this character’s abilities back to this previous state, and GMs will work with you on tying your PC’s prior narratives into how this event changes them.

Additionally, Legacy Characters are able to retain any magic items they were previously granted, but they are still subject to the rules on Magic Items and thus may be required to sell most or all of them in a fire sale to the shops in Starfall Square for a meager 10% of their market value. The exception to this is any item that does not have a listed market price in the Magic Items List, which is lost to your character as they are pulled through the cracks in reality.

Characters must have been made, approved, and interacted with Xohanian characters prior to 7/31/2025 on their previous server in order to classify as a Legacy Character. All other characters are considered new characters and follow the standard rules for Character Creation.

Players get TWO Legacy Character slots that can only be used ONCE each. They cannot be refilled. If a Legacy Character dies and is not revived or retires, the Legacy slot expires and the character may not be brought back. Legacy Characters do not have a Bench and they cannot be Benched.

Miscellaneous Rules & Policies

Companion Creature Rules

To maintain safety and fair play on Xohana Station and throughout the UAA, companion creatures are regulated. Highly intelligent or sentient creatures (such as those capable of complex reasoning or true self-awareness) may not be taken as companions. Generally, if a creature can speak, make its own decisions, or otherwise demonstrates “personhood,” it cannot be your companion.

If your character wants to keep pets, animal companions, or similar creatures, these rules apply:

  • You cannot have a companion creature with a CR higher than your character’s level. If you somehow gain a creature above your level, it will be immediately removed and rehomed to the Astral Arboretum.
  • You may have up to two companion creatures at a time. This includes pets, animal companions, or similar allies.
  • Swarms are allowed only if they all use the same stat block, their total combined CR does not exceed your character’s Level, and if pre-approved by staff.
  • Creatures with an Intelligence score of 4 or lower are generally permitted as companions.
  • Any creature with an Intelligence score of 5 or higher requires review and approval by staff before it can be kept as a companion.
  • Creatures with an Intelligence score of 7 or higher are considered sentient for the purposes of these rules and cannot be kept as companions under any circumstance except for class features that specifically allow it.

Breaking these rules can result in the removal of your companion, loss of privileges, and possible character penalties. Staff may check at any time to ensure compliance. Unregistered, disruptive, or overly powerful companions will be removed or re-classified.

Necromancy Policy

To maintain peace, safety, and ethical standards on Xohana Station and throughout the U.A.A., necromancy is tightly regulated. All players and characters practicing necromancy must follow these guidelines while on Xohana Station (though policies may be less strict in other locations in-game):

  • All undead must be registered (i.e. no secret zombies) with the Ministry and have written consent signed prior to death. Unregistered or non-consenting undead will be seized and destroyed.
  • No character may control more than three undead at a time, except by special Ministry approval (e.g. on Quests).
  • Undead must be kept out of public view in sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship. In public, undead must be disguised or concealed to avoid alarming others.
  • Undead may not be used in combat or as laborers without Ministry authorization and the proper permits.
  • Each undead must be clearly marked with its controlling necromancer’s ID and remain under direct supervision in public at all times.

Breaking these rules can result in loss of necromancy privileges, fines, confiscation or destruction of undead, and possible banishment from the Station. When in doubt, ask a GM or Organizer for guidance.

Character Creation

Please read this guide before starting to create your character.

Welcome to Xohana! Before embarking on your first adventure, please read this guide to ensure your character fits within the setting and follows the server’s unique approach.

The world of Xohana is vast and diverse. Our goal is to provide as many creative options as possible for you to bring your ideas to life. Nearly all official content from Wizards of the Coast, as well as select third-party material, is available for use, unless specifically listed as restricted. Please review the Banned Content list for anything that is not permitted. New material will be considered as it becomes available to the server, and the Council may vote to add or restrict options as needed.

This section will walk you through each step of character creation, with details specific to Xohana’s rules and expectations. The aim is to make your journey from concept to character as smooth as possible.

Character Sheets

D&D Beyond Only

Xohana requires all characters to be created and managed using D&D Beyond. You do not need to be a subscribed member, a free account will be all you need as a Player or a GM.

Our official campaign links unlock the shared sourcebooks, so you will have free access to any content that is available for use on Xohana.

Once your character is finished, you may leave the campaign link so others can use the slot; simply rejoin it when you need to level up or claim magic items.

Creating a Character

You can access the New Character Builder by logging into your D&D Beyond account and selecting the Collections menu on the site navigation toolbar and clicking the My Characters option. On that page, there is a Create A Character button in the top right corner of the page.

You can also get to the builder directly by visiting this link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder

For the Character Creation Method screen, you will want to select the Standard option.

If you are brand new to creating a character on D&D Beyond, it is recommended you also select the available checkbox labeled “Beginner? Show Help Text,” as it will add in helpful notes throughout the character creation process.

Home Tab

Sources

  • For this section, you will uncheck the Legacy box and leave the rest of the options selected.

Partnered Content

  • Click the Choose Partners dropdown list, then deselect Free League and leave the rest of the options selected.

Dice Rolling

  • This option enables virtual 3D dice that roll across your screen when you click to roll something. If it is disabled, clicking will still generate a randomly rolled number for you but it will not do the visual dice effect. It is up to you whether you want to leave dice rolling enabled or disable it.

Optional Features

  • Select both options for this section.

Advancement Type

  • Select the Milestone option. For more information on how Xohana handles character leveling, see PC Leveling & Tracking.

Hit Point Type

  • Select Fixed in the dropdown.

Use Prerequisites

  • Make sure both options remain checked.

Show Level-Scaled Spells

  • If your character has the ability to cast spells and also can cast them at a higher level, selecting this option will display the higher level versions of the same spell underneath the Spell Level heading for every level to which it can be upcast. This is optional and based on your personal preference.

Encumbrance Type

  • Select the Use Encumbrance option. Xohana D&D does actively track encumbrance, both in Quests and when at home on Xohana Station, so you need to be aware of how strong you are and how heavy your gear is.

Ignore Coin Weight

  • Make sure this option is checked, Xohana does not track gold weight.

Ability Score/Modifier Display

  • Leave the Modifiers Top option selected, as this is the format most GMs are used to seeing.

Character Privacy

  • Select the Public option. This is important, because without this option selected, no one else will be able to see your character sheet.

Class Tab

Your character’s class shapes their abilities, their approach to the world, and their role within the party. Are you drawn to arcane power as a Wizard, to divine purpose as a Cleric, or to the martial discipline of a Fighter?

Starting Level

All new characters start at Level 3. If this is not your first character on the server, you can start at a level up to the lowest level of the highest Rank reached by any of your past characters.

  • Recruit (3-4): Lvl 3 start
  • Cadet (5-8): Lvl 5 start
  • Ensign (9-12): Lvl 9 start
  • Officer (13-16): Lvl 13 start
  • Commander (17-20): Lvl 17 start

The new character can also be a lower level (e.g. Dixon dies at Level 11, the new character can be a maximum of Level 9, but could start at any level below that).

Character Class Rules

Xohana allows all official Classes and Subclasses published by Wizards of the Coast, with the exception of those specifically banned (see the Banned Content list).

If a Class or Subclass has a 2024 reprinted version, you must use the most current version; otherwise, use the original as published.

Multiclassing is allowed, though each character may have no more than two classes in total. Standard multiclassing rules from the Player’s Handbook apply. 2014 Subclasses CANNOT be multiclassed with 2024 Subclasses.

Some Classes or Subclasses may have unique server errata or clarifications; check the Class Errata tab of this document or ask a Helper if you have questions.

Adding Class & Levels

  1. Select a Class

Click on one of the classes that you would like to add. Note that if you want to select a Subclass from the 2014 ruleset, you will need to scroll to the bottom of the page and select the version of your class from the 2014 Core Rules section. Otherwise your Subclass option will not appear.

  1. Add the Class to Your Character

After you’ve selected a class you want, click the Add Class button at the bottom of the popup screen.

  1. Change Your Level

At the top of your Class options table, you should see the name of your Class and its icon followed by a dropdown box labeled Level. Set this box to Level 3.

NOTE: Though multiclassing is allowed, all characters that start at Level 3 must start with 3 levels in their primary Class. Characters starting at higher than Level 3 must maintain a minimum of 3 levels in their primary Class.

  1. Choose Your Options & Subclass

Under the Class Features section, you will see a number of different dropdown boxes indicating the various features your character can utilize. A number of these, indicated by a blue circle with an exclamation mark, have options for you to select. This includes choosing your Subclass.

Spellcasting

Some Classes, such as the Bard, will give you access to various Spells which your character will gain the ability to cast using Spell Slots. Certain low-powered spells, called Cantrips, do not use Spell Slots and can instead be cast at will.

Xohana allows all official Spells published by Wizards of the Coast, with the exception of those specifically banned (see the Banned Content list).

Some Spells may have unique server errata or clarifications; check the Spell Errata tab of this document or ask a Helper if you have questions.

Upon choosing a Class with the Spellcasting ability, you’ll be able to select options from the Spells tab that will appear next to the Class Features tab by clicking on the Add Spells dropdown. Clicking the name of a Spell will display the details of that spell.

Background Tab

Your character’s Background is more than just a mechanical choice, it’s the echo of the life they led before stepping into the tapestry of Xohana. Were they a gutter-runner in the alleys of an astral city, a scholar piecing together the mysteries of fractured worlds, or a wanderer shaped by untold catastrophes? Your Background gives flavor, inspiration, and a foundation for your character’s earliest skills.

All published Backgrounds from official sources are allowed unless otherwise listed in the Banned Content list. Backgrounds grant proficiencies, languages, and special features as listed in their source material.

Feel free to collaborate with GMs to weave elements of your Background into quests or personal story arcs. However, the ultimate responsibility for your character’s narrative rests with you. Bring your story to the world, and the world will answer in kind.

As with all things, if you are ever unsure about a Background, Feat, or their place in the setting, please ask in #questions or consult a Helper. The Council reserves the right to restrict or alter options as the server evolves.

Selecting a Background

Use the dropdown box to select an option for your Background. Selecting an option will display additional details about that Background, as well as providing a list of related features and options for you to select (if any).

Starting Feats

Some Backgrounds grant a Feat at first level (either a single Feat, or your choice from a limited selection). If your Background offers this benefit, you may choose any Feat available through that source, provided it is not specifically banned on the server (see Banned Content list).

NOTE: If you select a Background that does not provide a Feat, you may instead choose an Origin Feat from any officially published material. See Adding a Starting Feat below for more information.

Custom Backgrounds

Given the wide range of available material accessible to players, Xohana does not allow the Custom Background option to be selected. If none of the Backgrounds seem to fit your character exactly, see the section below on Reflavoring for additional advice.

Character Details

Alignment

Alignment in D&D serves as a compass for your character’s moral and ethical viewpoint. Whether they lean towards law and order, embrace chaos and freedom, champion the greater good, or navigate the shades of neutrality, alignment helps shape your character’s decisions and interactions. It’s a tool to guide roleplay and add depth to the story you tell.

Alignment does also play some minor roles in the mechanics of certain gameplay features, such as only Good aligned players being able to handle some magic items or effects that shift your character’s alignment. In the vast, multifaceted world of Xohana, alignments can also shift as characters grow and face new challenges. Heroes may find themselves questioning their ideals, while villains might discover a spark of redemption. This fluidity makes for richer, more nuanced storytelling.

Ultimately, alignment is a guide, not a constraint. Let it inspire your roleplay and help you craft a character who is uniquely yours in the world of Xohana.

Note on Evil Characters: If you’re considering playing a character with an Evil alignment, we encourage you to explore the complexity of what that means in a collaborative setting. Evil doesn’t have to mean disruptive, and we ask all players to be mindful of the shared story and their fellow adventurers.

If you’d like guidance, we recommend watching the following video from Matthew Colville, which offers tips on playing Evil characters in a way that enriches the game for everyone: On Being an Evil Character

Faith

In the vast and ever-shifting world of Xohana, the divine is as complex and multifaceted as the realms themselves. Each deity that adventurers may choose to follow has found their way here through the many great calamities that have fractured countless universes.

When the Weavestar flared into existence during the Starfall Cascade and the boundaries of reality blurred, entire pantheons were drawn into this new, shared space. As a result, Adventurers in Xohana have the freedom to choose any deity from the rich tapestry of published D&D lore. Whether you wish to follow a deity from the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron, or even lesser-known settings, all are welcome.

The gods of these various realms may have merged into singular, more powerful entities, or they may remain distinct, vying for influence and followers. This means that your chosen deity may have new titles, new rivalries, or even expanded domains as they adapt to the realities of this new universe.

Ultimately, the choice of whom your character worships is yours. As you adventure, you may find that your chosen deity’s influence ebbs and flows, reflecting the ever-changing nature of a world born from the merging of many.

Lifestyle

The Lifestyle option is used to describe your character’s lifestyle prior to becoming an officially registered Adventurer. This selection is entirely descriptive and does not have any mechanical effect, as Adventurers’ basic living expenses are covered by their contract with the Ministry and the Xohana Adventurer’s Guild.

Physical Characteristics

Hair, Skin, & Eyes

These features are entirely descriptive and you may use them to describe your character’s features, if relevant. These boxes are optional in this section and do not need to be filled in.

Height

Height is a required box to fill in, as height plays a mechanical role in the game. Your Species selection will determine the range of height that you can select from, so you may need to progress forward to Species selection then return to this tab to enter your height information. You may be no taller than the tallest height given for your Species and no shorter than the shortest height.

If specific height ranges are not given, use the following ranges based on your Creature Size:

  • Small: 2ft. - 4ft.
  • Medium: 4ft. - 8ft.
  • Large: 8ft. - 16ft.

Weight (lbs)

Weight is a required box to fill in, as weight plays a mechanical role in the game. Your Species selection will determine the range of weight that you can select from, so you may need to progress forward to Species selection then return to this tab to enter your weight information. You may be no heavier than the heaviest weight given for your Species and no lighter than the lightest weight.

If specific weight ranges are not given, use the following ranges based on your Creature Size:

  • Small: 30lbs. - 100lbs.
  • Medium: 100lbs - 250lbs.
  • Large: 250lbs. - 750lbs.

Age (Years)

Due to the strange time-dilation that occurs in the Xohanaverse, all species mature at the same rate: your character must be at least 18 years old, both physically and mentally, to participate in adventures. Any effect that would reduce a PC’s age below this threshold causes the immediate and permanent retirement of that character.

Gender

Gender is entirely descriptive and you may use this box to describe your character’s gender, if desired. This box is optional in this section and does not need to be filled in. Note that your selected Gender will appear on your Character Sheet underneath your PC’s name.

Personal Characteristics

The Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws boxes provide opportunities for you to explore aspects of who your character is on a personal level. This section is entirely optional and does not need to be filled in.

HOWEVER, regardless of who your character is, ALL Adventurers on Xohana share one key personality trait: they want to be an Adventurer. Adventuring is full-fledged career that takes time, training, and official registration with the Ministry. Your character’s reasoning for wanting to join the Xohana Adventurer’s Guild is your own to decide, but they should have some innate drive that pushes them to be a part of this organization.

Notes

The Organizations, Allies, Enemies, Backstory, and Other boxes provide opportunities for you to explore aspects of your character’s life, both prior to adventuring and evolving as they go out into the world of Xohana. This section is entirely optional and does not need to be filled in.

  • Customizing Your Origin is Allowed. Meaning you can assign your ability score bonuses to a different stat. More Info
  • Species that have an updated 2024 version must use the new version. If a 2014 Species does not have a released updated version, you may select it, but will be required to change to a 2024 version if one is released at a future date.

Abilities Tab

Ability Scores

Nearly everything of what your character does relies on six core abilities:

Strength - measures bodily power, athletic training, and the extent to which you can exert raw physical force.
Dexterity - measures agility, reflexes, and balance.
Constitution - measures health, stamina, and vital force.
Intelligence - measures mental acuity, accuracy of recall, and the ability to reason.
Wisdom - reflects how attuned you are to the world around you and represents perceptiveness and intuition.
Charisma - measures your ability to interact effectively with others. It includes such factors as confidence and eloquence, and it can represent a charming or commanding personality.

In Xohana, you may generate ability scores in one of two ways: Rolling for Stats or using the Standard Array. Stats are assigned manually on D&D Beyond. If you roll and are unhappy with your result, you may switch to Standard Array before finalizing your character.

Roll for Stats

Roll for stats in the #roll-stats channel using !rollstats. The command will roll until you have three sets of stats that have at least one ability at 16 or higher, and a second at 7 or lower. This system ensures that every adventurer is both unique and balanced, with both strengths and imperfections.

Choose the set of stats you like best and then assign them using the Manual/Rolled option in the dropdown box on the Abilities tab of the Character Creator. You can assign your stats to the Ability Scores in any order.

Be sure to include the link to your stat rolls with your final character submission. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask a Helper in the #help chat.

Standard Array

Use Standard Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. You may assign these numbers as you see fit. Use the Standard Array option in the dropdown box on the Abilities tab of the Character Creator, then use the additional dropdown boxes to assign the stats to your desired Ability Scores.

Equipment Tab

Each class and background in the game begins with various starting equipment, decided upon their class & background. A fighter may begin with a set of armour and weaponry, for example, while a priest may hold some memorabilia from their days in the priesthood.

When equipping your character, you may either take the starting equipment granted by your class and background, OR use the gold provided for your class to purchase your gear from the General Store after your PC is approved.

You will be provided with an option to select equipment for your Class and a second option for your Background. You must select the SAME option for both. So if you select Gold for your Class starting equipment, you must also select Gold for your Background starting equipment.

NOTE: if you select the Gold option, you will not be able to purchase gear until after your sheet has been approved for server use.

If you have questions about custom equipment, magic items, or starting wealth, ask a Helper for assistance in the #help channel.

Final Updates & Sheet Submission

When your sheet is ready for submission, you will create a post for them in the #character-submission channel using the following format:

Character Name:

Species:
Gender:
Age:

Height:

Weight:

Birthplace:

Class:

Subclass:

Background:

Starting Feat:

Stats Method:

Sheet Link:

@Organizer

After sending the post, an Organizer will review your sheet. If there are any changes to be made, the Organizer will create a thread with your submission post and ping you with any edits. Once final approval is met, the Organizer will create an official Character Log thread for your PC and then you will be officially able to use your character on the server.

NOTE: New PCs must go through a Xohana Adventurer’s Guild registration quest prior to joining any other quests (but they may still otherwise interact with the server through Roleplay, Downtime, Shops, etc.). Registration quests pay lucratively for GMs to encourage running these sessions, and we aim to have approved PCs complete their Registration Quest within one week of character approval.

I’m Approved, Now What?

Once your character is approved, you are free to begin interacting with the server In-Character. Before you can begin joining general Quests, you must first complete the Xohana Adventurer’s Guild Registration Quest (which should be available to you within one week of character approval). Prior to completing your XAG Registration, however, you may still interact with the various other parts of the server.

We encourage you to introduce your character’s journey to XAG Headquarters, be it from nearby Emberhold Burroughs right on the station or ripped through time and space from another reality, by using the #character-introduction channel. You also freely join in Roleplay with other players in the various RP channels available.

If you choose to go shopping, there are a variety of stores both mundane and magical in the Starfall Square Shops and #magic-item-shop channel and characters frequently hawk their no-longer-needed junk at the #auction-house. Finally, your Downtime begins accruing the moment your PC is approved, so you might be able to start earning some money before taking off on your adventures.

Making Changes After Approval

We understand that players are liable to make mistakes, especially with the wide range of available content to choose from, so we offer a limited period of time in which you’re allowed to retrain your character for free.

Before your first character reaches level 5 and graduates to Cadet rank, you may change their Class, Subclass, Feat choices, Spell choices, Proficiency/Expertise choices, and Ability Score placements. Your race cannot be changed in this manner.

To make a character change, you will need to make a copy of your current Character Sheet and make any changes to the copied sheet. Then, submit the new sheet as you would a standard character submission, but include a link to your PC’s log thread in the #character-log channel.

Character Logs & Badges

Character Logs

Character tracking is done is the #character-log forum channel. After character submission and approval, an Organizer will create a thread for your character that you will use to log all of their core interactions throughout their time on Xohana. This includes things like changes during level ups, usage of consumable items, burning of resources used in Downtime, tracking revival penalties, and much more.

Refer to the pinned example post for examples of all necessary tracking formats. In general, Xohana abides by a “more information is better than less” guideline, so if you are unsure if you should track something it is always recommended you err on the side of posting it in your Character Log.

Your Character Log is also accessible to GMs in order to post relevant information related to your character’s adventures. For example, if you contract a curse during a Quest, your GM may post in your Character Log the nature of the curse. On future Quests, other GMs are able to then review your log and use relevant information to make adventures more meaningful, impactful, and character specific, even if this is the first time they’ve interacted personally with your character.

NOTE: Although the Character Log is a useful place to track important information about your character, please remember that it is first and foremost an Out-of-Character tracking system that is also used for system audits. All posts in Character Log channels should be OOC in nature and focus on the mechanical and core lore changes to a character that are relevant to GMs and server staff.

Badges

What Are Badges?

Badges represent your character’s accumulated experience, growth, and effort earned through adventuring in the Xohana universe. They function similarly to traditional experience points (XP), but they provide greater flexibility by allowing you to choose how your character progresses and grows. They are not a tradeable resource, and can only be earned and spent as described below.

How Do I Earn Badges?

Quest Contracts

The primary method for earning Badges is by participating in Quests. Each official Quest Contract (see Pick Up Games) guarantees at least ONE (1) token per participating character, as well as a meager amount of gold. This represents the minimum wage the Ministry guarantees you as an Adventurer for accepting the contract.

NOTE: This 1 Token minimum is ONLY present on Quests that provide a Quest Contract. Token minimums are not required on other Quests, although GMs are encouraged to provide at least one Token per game session where appropriate. For games with Quest Contracts, GMs reserve the right to provide zero rewards in the event of Player disruption, dropping from the Quest without valid reason, or other server rules infractions. Organizers review every instance of zero rewards to ensure balance and fair play.

Additional Quest Rewards

Occasionally, GMs may award additional Badges to players who demonstrate exceptional roleplay, significant character development, or substantial contributions. They must spend their own well-earned GM currency (Ministry Medals) in order to do so, which is balanced against other possible rewards the GM can offer to your party. This includes things like loot, unique blessings, even pets and vehicles.

GMs are actively encouraged to provide a variety of reward types throughout their games. When it comes to rewarding additional Badges, GMs will typically award a single extra Token to the Player(s) that they felt truly embodied their characters during the session, or perhaps even the whole party, much in the way they provide GM Inspiration. Issuing 3 or more Badges per session to a single player is highly unlikely, and typically only takes place during world-changing triumphs or iconic in-depth character moments.

Special Events & Milestones

In rare cases, Badges may also be awarded through special events or server-wide milestones. However, these are infrequent to ensure that Badges remain a meaningful representation of your character’s real experiences as an adventurer.

More commonly, you will see the server offer vouchers for the various Token-required systems (except Character Leveling) that allow Players to receive a unique gift while also maintaining control over how they choose to spend their Badges and their time on the server.

How Do I Track Badges?

Badges are managed and tracked individually by players using the server’s !badge alias (you can also use !b) in your character’s #character-log. This alias conveniently keeps track of your current token balance.

All transactions involving Badges, whether they are earned, spent, or adjusted, must be clearly logged in your character’s log thread within the #character-logs channel. This logging provides transparency, makes auditing easy, and ensures everyone’s Badge balances are accurately maintained.

Alias Commands

  • !badge or !b: Checks your current Badges balance. If you have never run this command before, you need to run this first so that the alias can create a Custom Counter for your character.
  • !b +1: Adds one Badge
  • !b -1: Subtracts one Badge

How Do I Spend Badges?

Badges may be spent in various ways to customize your character’s growth and story progression. Below are the currently approved ways to spend Badges:

Leveling Up Your Character

  • To level up, spend Badges equal to the level you wish to reach. (Example: Leveling from 3 to 4 costs 4 Badges.) For more information, see Leveling Up.

Security Clearance

  • You may increase your character’s security clearance by spending Badges equal to the next highest alphabetical level (A=1, B=2, … Z=26). Higher clearance grants access to restricted information, hidden lore, and unique in-world insights.

Oopsie Button (Emergency Teleport)

  • Your character’s Arcanotech Communication Device includes a single free use of the Oopsie Button, teleporting your character back to Sacred Light Hospital in emergencies. Additional uses require spending Badges equal to your current character level, which must be held personally at the time of use or death.

One-of-a-Kind Items

  • Unique items require Badges to maintain ownership, burning 1 additional token per real-life day the item remains in your possession. Holding these items without sufficient Badges results in level loss and potentially severe in-character consequences.

Leveling Up Companions

  • Pets can be leveled and improved by spending Badges. While pets can advance in strength and abilities, a pet’s Challenge Rating (CR) may never exceed the character’s current level.

Housing and Property Upgrades

  • After this system’s release, Badges may be spent to acquire upgrades for your character’s personal housing space, offering benefits and customization options.

Vehicle Upgrades

  • Badges can be spent to purchase specialized, high-tier upgrades for personal vehicles. Standard vehicle upgrades are purchasable with gold, but the most powerful enhancements require Badges.

Learning New Proficiencies

  • Badges allow your character to learn new proficiencies (skills, armor types, weapon types, languages) through roleplay and time investment, with Badge spend representing dedicated training.

Guild Upgrades

  • Badges can be spent to purchase specialized, high-tier upgrades for Guilds. Standard guild upgrades are purchasable with gold, but the most powerful enhancements require Badges.

Crew Support

  • If you’re adventuring with the same Crew frequently, but one of your members starts to lag behind on their character level progression, this allows you to help them out. If a member of your Crew wants to level up but does not have enough Badges to do so, they may make up the difference from a pool of their Crewmates’ Badges.

Badges donated burn at a 2-to-1 ratio. If you are short by 2 Badges, your Crew will need to donate 4 total Badges to you in order for you to level up. This feature can only be used once per month per character.

Leveling Up

Advancing your character in Xohana uses the Badge system. Here’s how to properly level up, track your changes, and keep everything transparent for staff and GMs.

Step 1: Confirm You Have Enough Badges

Check your Badge balance (using the alias your character log or the bot dump channel). Make sure you have at least as many Badges as the level you want to reach (e.g., going from 3 to 4 requires 4 Badges).

Step 2: Spend Your Badges

Subtract the appropriate number of Badges from your character’s total. Update your Badge balance using the server alias in your character’s log thread.

Step 3: Update Your Character Sheet

Open your character sheet in D&D Beyond:

  • Click Manage and then Manage Character & Levels on the sidebar menu that pops up.
  • Navigate to the Class tab.
  • Increase your level to the new value by increasing the level dropdown by one of the Class you want to increase, or by adding a new Class.
  • Apply all new Class Features, Spells, Hit Points, and other options gained at this level. These will be marked with an exclamation point in a blue circle.
  • Double-check your choices for accuracy.

Step 4: Post in Your Character Log

After updating your sheet and Badge balance, post a summary of the level up in your character log thread. Include the date, your new level, Badges spent, and any significant changes or choices made.

Post Format:

Level Up: X to Y

Badges Spent: #

New Badge Balance: #

Summary of Choices:

- Class Feature: [Name & Selection]

- Spell: [Name of Spell learned and source]

- Proficiency: [Ability and Source]

- Expertise: [Ability and Source]

- Senses: [Ability, Source, and distance if applicable]

- Language: [Name and Source]

- Movement: [Type, Distance, and Source]

- Feat/ASI: [Choice(s) and Source]

…etc.

Only include in the Summary of Choices the information that is relevant to your level up. So if your character does not know any Spellcasting, you can omit the “Spell” line from the format.

Step 5: Notify Staff if Needed

Death, Wills, & Gifts

Death & Retirement

Upon the completion of any character's second Quest, they can be retired. Once a character's journey has run its course, whether through retirement or death, make a post in the #last-rites channel announcing the end of their adventures.

This channel is intended as an In-Character way for fellow Xohanians to pay their respects, mourn the fallen, swear divine vengeance, otherwise honor their memory.

Revival & Quest Difficulty

Death in Xohana D&D is split between game styles. Any Quest that is Hard or lower on the Quest Difficulty scale will have default PHB revival options and maximum quest lock of 7 IRL days. For more information on Quest Difficulty, and how it is different from Combat Difficulty, see the Quest Difficulty section of this guide.

Any Quest run at Maddening or above Quest Difficulty that results in character death has the possibility to capture a soul via in-game mechanics. Depending upon the GM who runs the Quest, it is also possible that these deaths may not be reversible or alterable without a successful Quest run by that same GM or another GM of their choice.

What Happens to My Stuff?

Wills

When a character dies or retires, their possessions are able to be given away provided that they have created a Will. Their body must be recovered in order to retrieve their items, but gold and the rest of their estate can still be willed away.

The player outlines who each of their magic items go to prior to adventuring by purchasing a Will (1,000gp x Your PC Level) in #purchase-receipts and posting a screenshot of the Will details in their Character Log. Once purchased, a Will remains in effect until activated (7 IRL days after a character is reported dead and has not been revived) or until a new Will is purchased to supersede it.

A Will outlines four major categories of assets and how your character wants them distributed after their passing: Gold, Magic Items, Mundane Equipment, and other assets (Housing, Vehicles, Companions, etc.).

Gold

The Ministry gladly allows for the willing away of one’s gold after death…assuming they pay the proper Estate Taxes, of course. In their Will, a character may designate either specific gold amounts, or percentages of their estate, to a number of PCs up to the deceased character’s level.

Depending on the receiving character’s Rank, a portion of the amount to be given to the character will be collected by the Ministry as Estate Tax. For example, if a deceased character wanted to give 1,000 gold to a Level 6 (Cadet Rank), the character would receive 250 gold and the Ministry would keep 750 gold as taxes. If they gave the same amount to a Level 18 character (Commander Rank), the character would keep 900 gold with the Ministry keeping only 100 gold as taxes. The Estate Tax percentage by Rank can be found in the table below.

Magic Items

Upon their demise or retirement, a character may select a number of their closest friends and colleagues equal to the deceased PC’s proficiency bonus at time of death.

The rest of their items can be sold at the rates of the item liquidation table below. The character’s total gold can then be gifted to other characters, as they desire (see Gold).

Mundane Equipment

This includes anything your character carries that is not a Magic Item but is listed in your Inventory on your character sheet. As mentioned previously, an item must be recovered in order for it to be willed away.

For Mundane Equipment, you can choose to EITHER:

Give Things Away

Choose a number of characters up to your character’s level. You can give each of these characters up to 3 mundane items each. Everything else is incinerated.

Liquidate

For every item in your inventory that has a D&D Beyond-listed gold price, it can be liquidated for 20% of its listed price and the gold added to the gold balance of your estate. Everything else is incinerated.

Homes, Vehicles, Companions, etc.

Other assets that do not explicitly fall into the previous two categories are dealt with in the following ways:

  • Housing: The Ministry currently holds a tight grip on the real estate market and does not allow for the transfer of housing. This is likely to change as the Housing system develops.
  • Vehicles: If you are the Deed Holder to a vehicle, you may designate a new Deed Holder in your Will to take ownership upon your death. The Ministry does not take responsibility for delivering anything other than paperwork to the new Deed Holder, so they must retrieve the vehicle themselves, and any associated costs or unpaid fees are immediately transferred to the new Deed Holder.
  • Companions: Companions owned by Adventurers are considered by the Ministry to be too dangerous to either rehome to new owners or release into the wild. All companion creatures are relocated to Beasthaven Grove, where they are cared for by the community of grove volunteers and staff.
  • Other Assets: Any other assets not listed above are considered lost or seized property.

Badges

Badges can be used for a number of different systems on the server and metaphorically represent your own personal time and effort invested into this character. We feel that investment should be honored and respected. On the other hand, we also have a mechanical need as a server to provide balance at the various Ranks of play.

With this in mind, if your character has a Badges balance remaining at their time of death, they may transfer them to a new character. However, there are some restrictions:

  1. Badges may only be transferred to a brand new character that is starting at Level 3. Legacy Characters or PCs that are starting at a higher tier are not eligible to receive Badges.

  2. You may transfer a number of Badges to your new PC equal to the dead PC’s level. If your character died with a Badges balance of 20 Badges but was only Level 11, they may transfer 11 Badges to their new character.

  3. You may choose to opt out of transferring Badges to your new character and instead opt to spend the Badges increasing your new character’s Security Clearance level. If used to purchase a higher Security Clearance, there is no limit on the number of Badges that may be spent, but any Badges remaining after the purchase are lost. For example, if you died with a balance of 20 Badges, you can start your character with a Security Clearance of up to Level M.

Gifting Rules

The Ministry greatly encourages gifting and donations, it’s one of their favorite things. Largely because of the exorbitant tax rate they collect. Any Player may give another Player any amount of gold as a Gift. In doing so, the Ministry collects a Gift Tax from the total amount equal to 50 + (100 / Receiver’s Level)

For example, if you wanted to give 1,000 gold to a Level 10 character, the Gift Tax would be [50 + (100 / 10)]% = (50 + 10)% = 60%. The character will keep 400 gold and will need to pay 600 gold to the Ministry in Gift Tax.

This tax is ALWAYS paid by the Receiver of a gift, not the Giver. This includes the market value of goods such as magic items. For example, if you gave the same Level 10 character a magic sword that has a Starfall Square Shops value of 1,000 gold, that character must still pay the 600 gold Gift Tax to the Ministry for the transaction.
