23. The Scales of Grief

2 1 0

There’s a weight we’re born beneath
A quiet truth we never speak
Carried in the way we care
In every bond we choose to bear

We reach out just to hold
Something fragile, something whole
Never told the cost would be
What it takes to feel deeply

Every love a balance made
Every joy a debt we’ve paid

On the scales of grief we stand
With open heart and open hands
What we gain, we risk to lose
There’s no way to only choose

The more we hold, the more it means
The deeper cut when it leaves
Every love we dare to keep
Tips the scales of grief

We build our lives from fleeting things
Moments, faces, borrowed springs
Laughing loud, then watching fade
Knowing nothing here will stay

Still we gather, still we try
Knowing everything will die
Not in fear, but something close
A quiet ache we carry most

We learn the shape of what we’ve known
By feeling where it’s overthrown

On the scales of grief we stand
With open heart and open hands
What we gain, we risk to lose
There’s no way to only choose

The more we hold, the more it means
The deeper cut when it leaves
Every love we dare to keep
Tips the scales of grief

If I could feel a little less
Would I be spared this heaviness?
Or would I lose the brighter side
Of everything that made it mine?

Because the joy was always real
In every laugh, in every feel
And I can’t separate the two
The loss and love are both the truth

So we carry on, we always do
With breaking hearts that still renew
Not untouched, but still alive
Still choosing this, still choosing life

On the scales of grief we stand
Not empty now, but fully manned
With every love and every scar
We are exactly where we are

The weight is proof that we have lived
Of all the care we chose to give
And though it bends us to our knees
It means we felt it, deeply

So let it weigh, don’t turn away
It’s the price of love we pay
And I would not erase the grief

Because it means
you meant something to me.
